ERASMUS+ Course

Course Overview

Across Europe, educators and coordinators are reimagining how schools can prepare learners to face environmental and social challenges. This course aligns with European Green Deal priorities and the UN Sustainable Development Goals by equipping schools with strategies that strengthen quality education, well-being, and civic responsibility. It supports institutions in embedding sustainability into teaching practice, creating a measurable and lasting impact on both learners and communities.

For teachers, this course is a journey into meaningful action. Through hands-on workshops and collaboration with peers from across Europe, participants will explore creative, interdisciplinary ways to connect global issues with local solutions. They’ll discover how to nurture critical thinking, empathy, and environmental responsibility — helping students become changemakers who can design a better tomorrow.

Learning Outcomes

After the course, participants will be able to:

  • Know and understand the term sustainability in the world today within different areas.
  • Be aware of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their connection to education.
  • Understand how to create, facilitate, and evaluate projects focusing on sustainability with students.
  • Promote the development of students in areas that affect our actions in the area of sustainability and gain techniques and methods to develop them.
  • Understand the importance of individual responsibility and values in our daily lives and responsible decision-making.
  • Collaborate on projects with other participants and reflect critically on topics of Sustainable Development.
  • Generate ready‐to‐use materials and methods to improve educational practices in daily school practice, considering the promotion of sustainability and SDGs.
  • Increase understanding of strategies and systems for implementing sustainability in schools and teaching practice across Europe.

All our methods are designed to be highly interactive and hands-on, ensuring a practical and engaging learning experience.

  • Experiential Learning: Hands-on workshops and activities that model sustainability concepts.
  • Collaborative Projects: Participants work together to design interdisciplinary lessons and community initiatives.
  • Practical Application: Educators design real-world sustainability tasks and projects for their classrooms.
  • Reflection and Action Planning: Guided reflection sessions help participants align learning with actionable steps.
  • Data and Technology Integration: Training on using data and digital tools to support sustainability education.

EU Competence Frameworks

This course aligns with key EU competence frameworks:

  • United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
  • European Green Deal and the EU Climate Law: connecting classroom practice with Europe's sustainability transition.
  • UNESCO's Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2030 Roadmap: highlighting sustainability as a key competency.
  • European Key Competences for Lifelong Learning: with strong focus on Citizenship Competence, Digital Competence, and Personal, Social and Learning Competence.

Erasmus+ Priorities

This course equips participants with skills that respond directly to key Erasmus+ priorities:

  • Environment and Fight against Climate Change: Central to the course, as participants learn to reduce ecological footprints, explore climate challenges, and design sustainable practices.
  • Digital Transformation: Participants use data-driven approaches and digital tools to measure sustainability impact and design innovative classroom projects.
  • Inclusion and Diversity: The course emphasizes equity, well-being, and social responsibility, ensuring that sustainability is accessible to all learners.
  • Participation in Democratic Life: By encouraging student-led projects and changemaker mindsets, the course empowers educators to promote civic engagement and active citizenship.

COURSE MODULES & TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

DAY 1 – Understanding Sustainability Foundations

Module 01 – Understanding Sustainability in the Modern World

Explore the concept of sustainability and its relevance today. Reflect on valuing sustainable practices and their global significance.

Module 02 – Foundations of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Deep dive into the 17 SDGs as a framework for action. Connect global goals to local and educational contexts.

Orientation Walk with a Local Guide (optional, complimentary)

A short post-class city walk for orientation and networking.
Voluntary, no fee, separate from the course, and not counted in Erasmus+ hours or outcomes.

DAY 2 – Climate and Everyday Action

Module 03 – Sustainability in Everyday Life

Simple actions to reduce ecological footprints at home and school. Exploring sustainable choices in energy, food, and consumption habits. Inspiring students through personal examples of sustainable living.

Module 04 – Climate Dynamics and Environmental Challenges

Understand how our planet’s climate systems work and what’s causing today’s environmental changes. Explore classroom-friendly ways to inspire students to take small actions for a sustainable future.

DAY 3 – Data, Values & Well-Being

Module 05 – Data-Driven and Value-Based Decisions for a Sustainable Tomorrow

Learn the importance of collecting and analyzing data to measure progress. Use data insights to make informed decisions for sustainability efforts.

Module 06 – Well-Being for a Sustainable Future

Understand how caring for people’s mental, physical, and social well-being connects to caring for the planet. Explore how inclusion, empathy, and social responsibility help build healthier and more sustainable communities.

DAY 4 – Fostering Sustainable Mindsets in Education

Module 07 –Sustainable Teaching and Learning Practice

Explore ways to embed sustainability principles across diverse subjects.
Apply practical methods that encourage systems thinking and long-term responsibility.

Module 08 – Developing Student-Led Sustainability Projects

Guide students to identify local challenges and propose solutions. Foster creativity and problem-solving through project-based learning.

DAY 5 – Changemakers & Action Planning

Module 09 – Becoming Changemakers and Goal Setting and Active Citizenship

Empower teachers and students to become sustainability ‘goalkeepers.’ Create actionable to-do lists aligned with global and local goals in a democratic setting and encourage active citizenship.

Module 10 – Turning Knowledge into Action

Equip participants with skills to inspire change in their communities. Plan initiatives for immediate implementation post-course.
